Roof area assumes a simple gable or hip roof: footprint with overhangs × rafter factor. Add 10–15% for shingle waste.

What "6 in 12" actually means

Pitch is a framing-square number: for every 12 inches you move in, the roof climbs this many inches. Drag the rise and see the triangle, the angle and the extra length of sloped roof (the rafter factor) change together.

run 12"rise 6"13 7/16" of rafter26.6°

At 6/12 every foot of level floor below needs 1.118 ft of rafter and roofing above it. That multiplier is why a steep roof costs more to shingle than its footprint suggests: 12/12 needs 41% more material than a flat roof over the same house.

Pitch, slope and angle

Carpenters say pitch or slope for rise per 12" of run (6/12, "six in twelve"). Strictly, old texts define pitch as rise over the full span, so a 6/12 slope is a "1/4 pitch"; you will still see that on old plans. Angle in degrees is arctan(rise ÷ run). Percent grade is rise ÷ run × 100, the number surveyors and civil drawings use.

Once you know the pitch, the rafter calculator gives rafter length, birdsmouth and ridge height.

Questions people ask

How do I calculate roof pitch?
Pitch is rise over run, expressed per 12 inches of horizontal run. Measure the vertical rise over any horizontal distance, then pitch = rise ÷ run × 12. A roof that rises 5 ft over a 10 ft run is 6/12.
How do I measure roof pitch without getting on the roof?
From the attic, hold a level horizontally against the underside of a rafter, mark 12" along the level, and measure straight up from that mark to the rafter bottom. That measurement is the pitch. From outside, measure the gable: rise = ridge height above the wall plate, run = half the building width.
What angle is a 4/12 roof?
4/12 is 18.43°. Other common pitches: 3/12 = 14.04°, 5/12 = 22.62°, 6/12 = 26.57°, 7/12 = 30.26°, 8/12 = 33.69°, 9/12 = 36.87°, 10/12 = 39.81°, 12/12 = 45°.
What is the rafter factor (pitch multiplier)?
The rafter factor is √(1 + (pitch/12)²): the length of sloped roof per foot of horizontal run. Multiply a building footprint (including overhangs) by it to get roof area, and multiply the rafter run by it to get rafter length. A 6/12 roof has a factor of 1.118.
What is the minimum pitch for asphalt shingles?
The IRC (R905.2.2) allows asphalt shingles on slopes of 2/12 or steeper; slopes from 2/12 up to 4/12 need double underlayment. Below 2/12, use a low-slope membrane roof.
What is a walkable roof pitch?
Up to about 6/12 most roofers walk without roof jacks; 7/12 and steeper usually need toe boards or harnesses and is priced as steep work. OSHA requires fall protection on any roof work 6 ft or more above a lower level regardless.
